Nearly three years after a massacre at a McDonald’s outlet in San Ysidro, San Diego is seeking to heal lingering emotional wounds by selling the former restaurant site and marking the spot where 21 people died with a sidewalk plaque and a small, landscaped memorial. Councilwoman Celia Ballesteros said the families of massacre victims she contacted wanted more than a flat marker placed in the sidewalk next to the site, as had been proposed. Ballesteros said that as a result, a 200-square-foot corner of the lot will be reserved as a memorial. Joan Kroc, the McDonald’s Corp. major stockholder, ordered the restaurant razed shortly after the shooting spree by James Huberty and later deeded the lot to the city.
