Through 1968 the United States dominated the pole vault in the Olympic Games, winning every gold medal since the modern Games began in 1896. But no U.S. athlete has won a gold medal in the event since.

To try to rectify the situation, Notre Dame High assistant Coach Tim Werner is offering a pole-vault clinic at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks on Sunday. The clinic is an all-day program designed to educate coaches and athletes about the event and to offer training programs and new techniques.

Werner said that the U.S. decline stems from a lack of knowledge about the event, especially at the high school level where fundamentals need to be instilled.

“A lot of kids who have vaulted pretty high have no idea what they’re doing,” Werner said. “They haven’t been taught the basic fundamentals. They’re jumping high off raw talent.”
