An unidentified man died and two companions were injured early Friday in Newhall when their speeding car hit a fire hydrant and a wall, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The dead man, believed to be in his 20s, was driving a 1972 Ford Mustang north on Sierra Highway south of San Fernando Road, CHP Officer Barry Hogan said.

One of the two surviving men told authorities that the three had been drinking that night in a bar in San Fernando, Hogan said.

About 2 a.m., the car spun out of control on a curve and struck the hydrant and a brick wall, Hogan said.

Passengers Tulio Moran, 20, and Miguel Birrerinto, 21, both of Newhall, were treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia.

Moran was listed in fair condition with a broken collarbone and shoulder blade, a hospital spokeswoman said. Birrerinto was listed in good condition and was to be released, she said.
