Cannery Finally Gets Some Fish

Share

After waiting more than two weeks for the fish to cooperate, a group of San Pedro commercial fishermen began processing mackerel Tuesday at their newly purchased cannery on Terminal Island.

About 50 workers began canning the fish at the former Star-Kist Foods cannery after two boats returned to shore with 150 tons of mackerel. Some of the fish was processed for pet food while the remainder was canned for human consumption.

The 30 or so fishermen, members of the San Pedro Fisherman’s Cooperative Assn., were ready to begin operations at the cannery on June 2, but were stymied when no mackerel could be found in local waters.

The fish were finally netted about 100 miles southwest of the port.

The cannery is one of only two operating at the harbor.
