Tennis Roundup : Navratilova, Evert Win Twice and Move Into the Semifinals
Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert each won two matches Thursday in a $200,000 women’s grass court tournament at Eastbourne, England.
Forced to play twice because of Wednesday’s rainout, Navratilova defeated Robin White, 6-4, 6-3, and then reached the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Isabelle Demongeot of France.
Navratilova will meet doubles partner Pam Shriver, who followed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Liz Smylie of Australia with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina.
Evert defeated Wendy White, 6-3, 6-4, and Larissa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 6-1, 6-3, and will play Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, who beat Elizabeth Minter of Australia, 7-5, 6-2, and Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa, 6-7, 6-3, 8-6.
Top-seeded Henri Leconte of France moved into the quarterfinals at Bristol, England, beating Andrew Castle of Britain, 6-3, 7-5, before rain struck.
