Nigel Mansell of Britain, driving a Williams-Honda, won the pole for the sixth annual Detroit Grand Prix today.
Mansell was timed in 1 minute 39.264 seconds, with an average speed of 90.667 m.p.h. Defending champion Ayrton Senna set the lap record of 1:38.301 last year.
Senna, with a speed of 89.457 m.p.h. in a Lotus-Honda, earned the other position in the front row.
