Costa Mesa police were searching for a poker player Sunday after a shooting that left another player wounded in an apparent dispute over winnings.

Police Lt. Cliff McBride identified the wounded man as Jorge Garfias, 23, of Santa Ana, who was treated for a gunshot wound in the arm and released.

McBride said that Garfias and several other men were playing poker at a residence in the 2000 block of Maple Street when the dispute broke out about 2 a.m. Sunday. He said that when Garfias tried to leave the game with $80 in winnings, another player ordered him to stay.

When Garfias refused, the angry player fired five shots, hitting Garfias once, McBride said.

The assailant, who police believe lives at the Maple Street address, then fled. He was being sought on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
