Rain Ruins Wimbledon Opening

WIMBLEDON, England —
The opening day of the 101st Wimbledon Tennis Championships was wiped out by rain today without a ball being struck on any of the 18 grass courts.
And adding to the day’s gloom was the announcement that Hana Mandlikova, last year’s beaten finalist, has withdrawn from this year’s tournament. Organizers said that Mandlikova, seeded No. 4, has not recovered from a right foot injury she developed before the French championships, which ended two weeks ago.
