Celtics’ McHale Undergoes Surgery, Might Be Ready for Start of Next Season
Boston Celtic forward Kevin McHale, who played the last three months of the National Basketball Assn. season with a broken bone in his right foot, underwent surgery Monday.
A team spokesman said McHale’s lower leg and foot would be in a cast for 8 to 12 weeks. Next season begins in late October and it is uncertain whether he will be ready to play by that time.
In Monday’s operation, McHale had bone spurs removed from his right ankle and a screw inserted in the broken navicular bone of his right foot.
McHale was injured March 11 in a game against Phoenix when a Sun player stepped on his foot and McHale pulled it away.
Despite the injury, the seven-year veteran was named to the all-NBA first team.
McHale played in 77 of the 82 regular-season games and was sixth in the league with a 26.1-point scoring average. He led the NBA with a .604 field goal percentage and was seventh in blocked shots.
In the final playoff series against the Lakers, he played in all six games and averaged 20.5 points and 9 rebounds.
