Cerritos : Development Jobs Budgeted

The Cerritos City Council has adopted an $89-million budget for fiscal 1987-88. It includes $30.8 million for city operations and programs, and $58.5 million for redevelopment projects, including $30 million for the Towne Center office, hotel and shopping center project and $10.3 million for the expansion of the highly successful Auto Square.

The 1987-88 budget is about $1.1 million larger than last year. Before council members voted 5-0 to adopt the new budget, they made several last-minute changes. The council added $125,000 to hire an additional sheriff’s deputy. The council said it will review the city’s annual crime statistics in August before deciding whether the new position should be filled by a patrol officer or a detective. In the coming fiscal year, the city will spend $3.8 million to contract for police and fire protection with the Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Other late budget changes included $80,000 for additional lights for softball diamonds at Cerritos Park East and $50,000 for the design of city entrance signs to be placed on streets leading into the city.

As part of the new budget, council members will receive a slight increase in pay from $6,720 to $7,080 a year.
