Huntington Beach : Pit Bull Found Loose in Yard Is Impounded

A county animal control officer on Wednesday impounded a pit bull terrier that was declared a vicious animal last week because it was found loose in the owner’s backyard in Huntington Beach.

Sgt. Brian Frick said a television crew that had gone to Rob Yorba’s home at Spar Circle to film the female dog, named Phoenicia, alerted animal control officers when it was found loose.

When it was declared a vicious animal last week because of complaints by neighbors, the animal control officials ordered Yorba to keep the dog chained or caged at all times.

Yorba said he had complied with the orders but that someone, whom he would not identify, had let the dog out Wednesday afternoon.

“I went along with all their rules. But somebody put her out and didn’t chain her,” he said.

In order to retrieve his pet, Frick said, Yorba would have to be in total compliance with animal-control regulations such as a steel pipe in the backyard strong enough to hold the dog, clearly visible warning signs on the property and a six-foot chain capable of restraining the animal.

“I don’t see any problem with him getting the dog back,” Frick said. “He’s shown a willingness to comply. He’s been cooperative so far.”
