Daytime television stars will have their day in the sun on Tuesday. Coincidentally, that also happens to be a milestone day for one of daytime TV's staples, "Guiding Light."
The stars will be out in force for the 14th annual Daytime Emmy Awards when they take place Tuesday in New York. The ceremonies will be televised nationally over ABC (2-4 p.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10, 42).
Tuesday also marks the 35th anniversary of "Guiding Light," which had its first telecast June 30, 1952, on CBS. The series actually is in its 50th broadcast year, having started on radio in January, 1937. The serial is the only former radio drama still on the air and is the longest-running dramatic program in broadcast history.
There will be several on-air events to coincide with the anniversary, including the return of a former character, the arrival of a new one and encore scenes, selected by viewers, aired at the end of each of this week's episodes.
"Guiding Light" also will have its own stake in the Emmy festivities on Tuesday. The show has six nominations, including Kim Zimmer (who plays Reva Shayne) in the lead actress category and Krista Tesreau (who plays Mindy), nominated in the ingenue category.
"As the World Turns" is going into the Emmy fest with the most nominations--20--followed by "Santa Barbara" with 14, and "Pee-wee's Playhouse" and "The Young and the Restless" with a dozen each.
Nominated as best daytime drama series are "All My Children," "As the World Turns," "Santa Barbara" and "The Young and the Restless."
The Emmy for best game-audience participation show will go to one of the following: "Jeopardy!," "The Price Is Right," "The $25,000 Pyramid" or "Wheel of Fortune."
The game-show host nominees are Bob Barker of "The Price Is Right," Dick Clark of "$25,000 Pyramid," Pat Sajak of "Wheel of Fortune" and Alex Trebek of "Jeopardy!"
Competing in the talk/service show category are "Donahue," "Hour Magazine," "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "This Old House." Additionally, Phil Donahue, Winfrey and Gary Collins of "Hour Magazine" landed nominations in the talk/service show host category.
