Rudi Koopmans, former European light heavyweight boxing champion, was sentenced to a one-year prison term for his role in an extortion scheme in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Koopmans, 39, was found guilty of attempted extortion and threatening physical violence, said a court spokesman, who spoke in exchange for anonymity. The former Dutch champion denied the charges in court hearings earlier this month.

The charges resulted from Koopmans’ association with a debt collectors’ firm, against which Rotterdam police received numerous complaints of violent threats delivered by telephone as well as in person.
