Share

The Bonita Unified School District has announced that former Bonita school administator Mitchell Gilbert will come out of retirement to serve as acting superintendent of the 9,000-student district.

Gilbert, who headed instruction and curriculum for the district from 1958 to 1969, will replace James T. Johnson, who is retiring after 17 years as superintendent of the district that spans San Dimas and La Verne.

After leaving Bonita, Gilbert served as superintendent of the Cajon Valley School District for eight years. He was a professor and dean in the School of Education at U.S. International University in San Diego for two and a half years, and then took a job as superintendent of the McFarland School District in northern California until his retirement in 1985.

Gilbert, who takes over after a bitter two-year contract dispute between teachers and the district, will serve at least until the Nov. 3 school district elections, officials said. At that point, school board members will decide on a full-time superintendent.
