Public Funds for Jewish Center
Thanks to staff writer Richard Simon for informing us that the Los Angeles City Council voted to issue $9.5 million in tax-exempt bonds to help pay for construction of a Jewish community center in Canoga Park.
It seems rather insensitive at this particular time to ask for special treatment for a specific group of citizens when our city is presently scraping up dirt and looking for financing to help shelter a group of homeless unfortunates.
As a matter of fact, I am appalled that Zev Yaroslavsky, chairman of the City Council Finance Committee, and other Jewish members of the Council would support such a flagrant violation of our constitutional requirement for separation of church and state. It seems to me that these public officials are sworn to protect such doctrine.
