Pete Rose Is the Other Side of the Coin

After reading the letter about Steve Sax’s consideration of his Louisville fan, I hope you will print the other side of the coin: My experience with Pete Rose.

I attended a baseball card show at the Pasadena Convention Center June 27 which featured Mr. Rose and Eric Davis. After purchasing autograph tickets at $8 and $6, respectively, and waiting some 2 1/2 hours, Mr. Rose would not even personalize his signature to my 1-year-old son, who was with me. When I asked him why, he replied, “It would take me twice as long, know what I mean?”

Well, excuse me, Mr. Rose, but I feel that $8 entitles me to a little more than an impersonal signature that I could get anywhere. Dave Stieb and Franklin Stubbs, whom we have also met, didn’t seem to mind taking the extra time (probably all of 15 seconds) to write my son’s name, and they didn’t charge a cent. Perhaps you need lessons in professional courtesy from them, rather than making money from your mere presence.
