Rangers, Howe Reportedly Close to a Deal, but Baseball Must Approve

General Manager Tom Grieve of the Texas Rangers has had talks with the agent of drug-plagued pitcher Steve Howe, and a source said a deal could be worked out within the next week, the Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

Howe, 29, was released by the Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins in 1985. He recently returned to his home in Southern California from Mexico, where he pitched for Tabasco.

Interest in Howe picked up after his strong showing in the Mexican League, said John Lence, his attorney. Lence said Howe pitched 23 innings for Tabasco, allowing 4 hits and no runs.

“Steve Howe has to get the OK from major league baseball, which his agent is in the process of getting, before this can be pursued in a serious fashion, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start investigating,” Grieve said.

Grieve left town Thursday afternoon, and the Morning News quoted a Ranger source as saying he flew to meet with Howe.
