Robert Garfias, a noted ethno-musicologist and recent appointee to the National Arts Council, has resigned as UC Irvine’s dean of fine arts, a position he held since 1982. Garfias’ unexpected resignation became effective July 1, but he has agreed to remain until Jan. 1.
