Woods of Newport Beach Tied for Lead in Golf Championship
Eric Woods of Newport Beach was tied with two other golfers for the lead Tuesday after the second qualifying round in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
Garth Johnston of Rochester, Minn., and Dennis Walsh of Groves, Tex., were tied with Woods at 2-under-par 142 after 36 holes.
“Yesterday, I didn’t see the rough. Today, it was my buddy,” said Woods. “Yesterday, I hit 17 greens and covered the pins. Today, I aimed at the pin, but didn’t get near them.”
Woods shot 68-74, Johnston shot 65-77 and Walsh, the 1979 Public Links champion, shot 70-72.
A total of 159 amateurs completed qualifying play Tuesday at Glenview Golf Course. The field will be reduced to 64 for today’s opening of match play.
