Mats Wilander survived a day of upsets Wednesday, winning his second-round match in the U.S. Open Clay Court Championships while seven seeded players were eliminated.

Wilander, seeded No. 1, beat Leif Shiras, 6-1, 7-5, but No. 2 Andres Gomez lost, along with No. 6 Tarik Benhabiles, No. 7 Thierry Tulasne, No. 8 Jimmy Arias, No. 9 Jay Berger, No. 13 Mel Purcell and No. 15 Todd Witsken.

Gomez, the defending champion, was beaten by 22-year-old South African Gary Muller, who is ranked 151st in the world, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Arias was unable to cash in seven match points and lost to Richey Renenberg, 6-7, 6-4, 11-9. Jimmy Brown beat Benhabiles, 7-5, 6-1, and Berger fell, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, to Blaine Willenborg.

Seeded winners included No. 3 Kent Carlsson, No. 4 Martin Jaite, and No. 14 Andre Agassi.

Wally Masur of Australia rallied from a 1-3 deficit in the third set to win the final five games and oust Jeff Tarango of Manhattan Beach, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, in a second-round match at Livingston, N.J.

Tarango, a Stanford sophomore, appeared in command until Masur, a semifinalist at the Australian Open, won 20 of the final 37 points.

“I was beatable today,” Masur said. “He was a little inexperienced and that was the difference in the end.”

While top-seeded Pam Shriver gained the third round of a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Newport, R.I., third-seeded Wendy Turnbull did not.

Shriver routed Patty Fendick, two-time NCAA champion from Stanford, 6-2, 6-1, but Turnbull lost to another Stanford NCAA champion, Alycia Moulton, 6-4, 6-0.
