Jerry Robinson Arrested: Drug Charge

Linebacker Jerry Robinson of the Raiders was arrested for investigation of drug possession Thursday after speeding through an accident scene and leading deputies on a chase, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Rock cocaine and non-prescription codeine were allegedly found in the car of the eight-year National Football League player after he was stopped by L.A. County sheriff’s deputies.

The deputies were stopping traffic at the scene of a major auto accident near Rancho Palos Verdes when Robinson allegedly sped through a flared-off area at about 1:30 a.m., Deputy Pete Fosselman said.

Robinson, 30, was driving a gray Mercedes-Benz. The former three-time UCLA All-American was taken to the Lomita sheriff’s station and booked for investigation of driving under the influence of drugs and possession of controlled substances, Fosselman said.

Deputies said five rocks of cocaine and several codeine tablets were found on the center console of the two-seat roadster.

The outside linebacker, who started each of the Raiders’ 16 games last season, was released at 4:45 a.m. on a $2,500 bond, the deputy said.

Robinson lives in Rancho Palos Verdes with his wife and their two children.

The Raiders said they need time to investigate the charges against Robinson before making any comment.

“We want to just look into the situation and find out some of the details before we say anything,” senior administrator Mike Ornstein said. “We’re just trying to find out what happened.”

Robinson was acquired by the Raiders from the Philadelphia Eagles in October 1985. He was the Eagles’ first-round draft choice in 1979.
