Laguna Beach Community Development Director June Catalano will leave her job next month to become Santa Ana’s executive director of planning and building safety, Santa Ana City Manager Dave Ream announced Friday.

Catalano has held her current post for about five years. She previously worked as deputy director of development services in Huntington Beach and as a senior level planner with the county Environmental Management Agency.

As head of Santa Ana’s Planning and Building Safety Agency, Catalano will oversee code enforcement, development processing and land use planning. She will report directly to Ream.

The job of deputy city manager for development, vacated by Rex Swanson last month, has been eliminated, Ream said.

Catalano’s salary will be about $75,000. She is filling a post that has been vacant since former agency director Phil Freeland resigned in July, 1986.

Catalano’s husband, Ray Catalano, is an Irvine city councilman.
