San Diego
A seaman stationed aboard the guided missile cruiser Long Beach was killed Sunday afternoon when he was hit by a car while he was pushing his disabled vehicle on the Coronado Bridge, the San Diego County coroner’s office reported.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Bradley Swiger, 19, from Shinnston, W.Va., was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputy Coroner Chuck Bolton said Swiger and a friend, Christopher Burstein, were pushing the car westbound on the bridge when a car driven by Huy Phung of San Diego struck them from behind. Swiger’s car, occupied by the seaman’s wife and Burstein’s girlfriend, burst into flames and burned, but the two women escaped.
Phung, Burstein and his girlfriend, Lisa Schick, were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center.
