In the second episode in as many days, a German shepherd was shot to death Sunday after biting a San Diego police officer.
Police Sgt. Jim Wallace said Sunday’s incident occurred at 10 a.m. in Southeast San Diego while two patrol officers were pursuing the driver of a stolen car.
After the suspect abandoned the vehicle in the 3500 block of 47th Street, the officers gave chase on foot and entered a yard where a teen-age girl was holding a German shepherd.
When the dog broke loose and bit Officer Richard Nehrich on the leg, he shot the dog once with his police revolver, killing it. The suspect, meanwhile, escaped. Nehrich was taken to Mercy Hospital and was treated for a severe cut and puncture wound.
One day earlier, police investigating a burglary on Altadena Street in East San Diego met another angry canine.
Officers Rebecca Ellis and Mark Kemp were talking with a resident attempting to restrain a German shepherd when the dog attacked its owner and then burst through the screen door and bit Ellis on the elbow.
When the animal refused to let go, Ellis shot it. The officer was treated at Alvarado Community Hospital for a puncture wound and tear to the left arm, Wallace said.
