More than 132 pounds of fish supplied to markets and fishmongers was destroyed after tests showed high levels of mercury, scientists said Sunday.

Mariano Aleandri, head of the Institute of Preventive Zoology in Rome, said the fish were discovered to contain mercury levels of between 1.31 and 5.52 milligrams per kilogram.

Excessive doses of mercury can cause kidney damage and anemia. A maximum level of 0.7 milligrams per kilogram is allowed under Italian health regulations.
