El Segundo : Hearing Set on Flight Plans
The City Council has set a public hearing for Tuesday to discuss the potential impact of MGM Grand Air’s plan to operate flights out of Imperial Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport.
The council opposes the luxury airline’s new service to Newark, which would involve eight to 10 flights six days a week at the LAX terminal closest to El Segundo. Aircraft noise at the Imperial Terminal has been the subject of ongoing battles between the city and the airport since the early 1970s.
Planning Director Lynn Harris told the council that this is the first proposed use of the terminal for regularly scheduled passenger service, rather than charter and overflow flights. The Board of Airport Commissioners had assured El Segundo officials that use of the terminal will be reevaluated after an airport expansion project is complete, Harris said.
Saying the airline plans to use 727-100 aircraft that do not comply with Los Angeles noise policies, members of the El Segundo Noise Abatement Committee said they will fight to close Imperial Terminal.
