Auburn University basketball Coach Sonny Smith named former Tulane coach Ned Fowler as his defensive assistant, saying Fowler deserves a chance to put a point-shaving scandal behind him.

Fowler went into the insurance business after Tulane dropped its basketball program in 1985 in the wake of allegations of gambling payoffs and drug use by players.

Fowler will coordinate the team’s defensive plans and assist in recruiting, Smith said.
