Gibson Had Murray Swinging and Missing
I take issue with Jim Murray’s provincial assessment of former pitching ace Bob Gibson (July 19). Murray was correct in his assessment of the late Satchel Paige as the greatest, or best “black pitcher” of all time. But, he should have used an asterisk, because Paige was barred from the big leagues because of his race until the twilight of his wondrous career.
But, why relegate Gibson to the back of the bus? What starting pitcher of any color ever finished a season with a 1.12 earned-run average, in addition to his other prodigious lifetime statistics?
