Leningrad’s Kirov Opera became the first Soviet opera company to perform at the Covent Garden Royal Opera House Tuesday night with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades.” The Kirov, which traces its origins back to a company formed by Catherine the Great in 1783, is touring with 326 musicians, singers, dancers, support staff and 20 truckloads of equipment.
