City Studies Plan to Curb 30-Day Condo Rentals

Share

Glendale officials are considering ways to restrict the use of condominiums and apartments as short-term boarding houses leased primarily to business travelers for less than a month.

On Tuesday, City Council took no action on a Planning Commission recommendation that would prohibit the rental of residentially zoned apartments and condominiums for less than 31 days. Instead, council members ordered staff to meet with business leaders and rental agents to study the practice.

Eight individual units in six Glendale apartment and condominium complexes are registered with the city clerk as transient rentals. A La Canada Flintridge company called the Lodging Connection subleases the dwellings on behalf of the tenants and owners.

City planners contend that the rentals pose maintenance and security problems for long-term renters. But Stan Gould, owner of the Lodging Connection, argues that the complaints are unfounded.
