Golf Roundup : Trevor Dodds Shoots 67 for One-Stroke Lead

Trevor Dodds, who had his first top-10 finish of his career last week, had six birdies and only one bogey Friday to take a one-stroke lead in the second round of the $600,000 Federal Express St. Jude golf tournament at Cordova, Tenn.

Dodds, 27, a native of South Africa now living in Dallas, started the day two strokes off the lead after an opening-round 68 at Colonial Country Club, and Friday’s 67 put him at nine-under-par 135 on the 7,282-yard course, longest on the PGA Tour.

In second place was Andy Dillard, who is also looking for his first Tour victory. Fuzzy Zoeller was two strokes off the pace after a 66. Don Pooley was also at 137.

Curtis Strange, Mike McCullough, Jay Don Blake and Mike Bender were grouped 138 while Russ Cochran, the left-hander from Paducah, Ky., who held a one-stroke first-round lead, had a 73 and is at 139.

Play was suspended because of thunder and lightning for 1 hour 35 minutes. The storm dropped temperatures on the course, where at midday the thermometer read 95. Combined with the humidity, the heat index was at 108 degrees.

Despite back-to-back bogeys on the back nine, Chris Johnson shot a one-under 71 to maintain a one-shot lead after two rounds of the $275,000 LPGA Columbia Savings National Pro-Am at the Denver suburb of Englewood, Colo.

Johnson, who shot a six-under 66 at Meridian Golf Club Thursday, struggled to break par at Lone Tree Country Club.

Sally Quinlan had asecond-round 68 at Lone Tree, the best round of the day, to move into second place with a 36-hole total of 138.

Rookie Jill Briles shot 1-under 71 at Lone Tree and was alone in third place at 139. Laurie Rinker turned in her second straight 70 and was another shot back at 140.

PGA Senior Tour rookie Larry Mowry shot a four-under-par 66 to grab a one-stroke lead over seven players after one round of the $250,000 Commemorative tournament at Scarborough-on-Hudson, N.Y.

Former NFL quarterback John Brodie, Don Massengale, Miller Barber, Gene Littler, Dale Douglass, Bill Collins and Fred Hawkins all shot 67s.

Two-time defending champion Lee Elder shot a 71 as did Arnold Palmer. Chi Chi Rodriguez, a five-time winner this year and atop the Senior money list, was seven strokes out of the lead after a 73.

U.S. Open champion Laura Davies overcame a double-bogey on the first hole to shoot a one-under-par 72 for a two-shot lead after two rounds of the $165,000 British Women’s Open Championship at St. Mellion, England.

Davies was seven shots behind her playing partner, first-round leader Little, after her poor start. But she birdied six of her last 11 holes to finish with a 36-hole score of 145, one under par.

American Muffin Spencer-Devlin shot a 68 and was second at 147. Little ballooned to an 80 for 149.
