Curren Defeats Cash to Win Tournament at Newport Beach
Kevin Curren came up with 10 aces and 12 service winners Sunday to defeat Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, in the final of the Hartmarx tennis tournament at the John Wayne Tennis Club in Newport Beach.
Curren broke Cash to take a 2-1 lead in the first set in front of an estimated crowd of 1,800. Both then held serve through 5-4, and, at set point, Cash ended a deep crosscourt rally with a forehand into the net.
In the second set, both players held serve until Cash broke at 6-5 and then held to even the match.
In the third, Curren, charging the net at almost every opportunity, pressured Cash to hit wide and long. With Curren serving at match point, Cash tried to volley to Curren’s backhand, but his shot fell three inches wide.
