Memorial Rites for Cameron Stewart, Popular Cal State Fullerton Professor

A memorial service for Cal State Fullerton history professor Cameron Stewart will be held Sept. 18, the university announced Monday.

Stewart, 51, died July 23 at Placentia-Linda Hospital after a heart attack earlier in the day at his home.

A specialist in modern U.S. history, Stewart received his doctorate from Claremont Graduate School. He had been on the Cal State Fullerton faculty since 1967.

“His death came as a shock,” said James F. Woodward, chairman of the university’s history department. “He was what I would call a ‘charismatic instructor,’ an outstanding lecturer, very sensitive to his students’ concerns and problems.”

The university’s public information office described Stewart as “a gifted and popular teacher and an expert in the areas of the Spanish Civil War and the Pacific Theater Operations in World War II.”

Stewart was serving his second term in the the Cal State Fullerton Academic Senate.

Woodward said funeral services for Stewart were private. The university will hold the memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 18 in the auditorium of the University Center.

Stewart is survived by his son, Ian, of Yorba Linda; a brother, Terry, of LaGrange, Tex., and an aunt, Blanche Stewart, of Jamestown, N.D.
