Sports agents who contact college athletes in Alabama must first obtain a license from a new commission or face possible criminal penalties under a new state law.
State Sen. Gerald Dial, said the commission is a response to dealings between sports agent Norby Walters and former Auburn University running back Brent Fullwood and an agreement Walters signed with Derrick McKey, a former basketball star at the University of Alabama.
Walters, who is under federal investigation, has sued Fullwood, claiming the former Auburn star violated the terms of a 1986 agreement the two negotiated before Fullwood’s senior season at Auburn.
McKey, the Southeastern Conference player of the year last season, had to forgo his senior season of eligibility after revealing that he had signed an agreement with Walters.
