A total of 143 new cases of AIDS were reported last month in San Francisco as the deadly epidemic showed no signs of a slowdown, authorities said. The city’s Department of Public Health also announced that 64 AIDS deaths were reported last month. Dr. George Lemp, chief of surveillance for the department’s AIDS Office, said the July figures were “even on the high side of our projection” and indicated that the six-year epidemic’s death curve had yet to reach a plateau. He noted that 96 new cases of the fatal disease had been reported in June. “It’s another surge,” Lemp said. “The epidemic is continuing the trend upward. There is no indication of any leveling off.”
