Hermosa Beach Councilman to Take Part in Nuclear Protest

Hermosa Beach City Councilman Jim Rosenberger says he expects to be arrested Sunday at the Nevada Nuclear Weapons Test Site, where he plans to trespass in protest of federal nuclear weapons policies.

“I’m not looking at it as an official getting arrested, I’m looking at it as an individual taking a stand,” Rosenberger said in an interview.

“I feel it’s important only because I think we should all be expressing ourselves. . . . Liberal, conservative, young, old--it’s an issue that crosses all lines.”

Santa Monica City Councilmen Dennis Zane and David Finkel and West Hollywood Councilwoman Helen Albert are also planning to be arrested at Sunday’s rally at the test site 60 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The protest is scheduled to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

“If enough people from all walks of life get involved in it,” Rosenberger said, “it should send a clear message to the powers that be in Washington.”
