A Van Nuys woman was seriously injured Wednesday when her car collided with another car, then hit a traffic signal at an Encino intersection, authorities said.

Saundra Smith, 51, was in serious but stable condition at Holy Cross Hospital after suffering head injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Los Angeles police said Smith was driving north on White Oak Avenue at 12:30 p.m. when she apparently ran a red light at Victory Boulevard and hit the rear of a car traveling east, Sgt. Bill Selesky said. After hitting the car driven by Carmen Giron, 36, of Van Nuys, Smith’s vehicle spun backward and struck the traffic signal on the northeast corner of White Oak and Victory, Selesky said.

Witnesses said Smith was traveling about 45 m.p.h. and Giron about 35 m.p.h., Selesky said.

Smith was taken by helicopter to Holy Cross Hospital, and Giron was not injured, Selesky said.
