Marine Recruit Injured in Boxing Contest Dies
The 18-year-old Marine recruit who had been on a life-support machine since being severely injured last Sunday in a boxing match died Friday night at Balboa Naval Hospital from brain damage, the Marine Corps reported.
Pvt. Paul Resce, of Romeoville, Ill., died from a subdural hematoma. Maj. Jerry Broeckert said Resce, who volunteered to take part in the traditional boxing matches that are held in the 10th week of the recruits’ 11-week training program, was wearing the standard safety headgear while in the ring.
Resce suffered a blow to the head during the final round of his three-round bout.
The matches have been suspended until an investigation is completed.
