Gunman Kills Bartender in National City
A bartender was shot and killed while working in a National City restaurant Saturday night, and police have not determined the identity of the suspect or a motive for the slaying, authorities said.
George Reyes, 21, of Chula Vista, was pronounced dead of multiple gunshot wounds at UC San Diego Medical Center shortly after the 11:30 p.m. incident at the La Mision Restaurant at 2200 Highland Ave., a National City police spokeswoman said.
Witnesses told police the suspect walked into the bar area of the restaurant and shot Reyes four to six times at close range, then fled out the front door, according to the police spokeswoman.
It was not known how many people were in the restaurant at the time of the shooting, but police said it is “usually pretty crowded” on the weekends. No one else in the bar area was threatened by the suspect, the spokeswoman added.
Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the shooting.
