A strike by 1,200 registered nurses at three private hospitals in the eastern San Francisco Bay area continued amid predictions that the walkout will be a long one. The nurses, members of the California Nurses Assn., walked off their jobs Tuesday in a demand for higher salaries and better working conditions. Their contract expired July 1. Most of the nurses earn between $25,000 and $35,000 a year and want 7% raises for each of the next two years to cover increased workloads. The hospitals have offered about half that amount. The Hospitals directly affected by the strike are Alta Bates and Herrick in Berkeley and Providence in Oakland.
