Norwalk : Vernola Has 2 Challengers

Share

Luigi A. Vernola, appointed to the Norwalk City Council in May, will have to beat two challengers if he wants to retain his seat in this fall’s special municipal election. Richard D. Buttery, a 51-year-old sales manager, and Ron Kelly, 28, both filed last week for Vernola’s spot on the council.

Buttery said he is opposing Vernola primarily because Vernola was “hand-picked” by the council to replace Cecil N. Green. “I want to give people a choice.”

The Nov. 3 election, held in conjunction with local school board elections, will fill the remaining two years of Green’s unexpired term. Green left the council when he was elected to the state Senate in a special election.

A single parent with five children, Buttery has lived in Norwalk off and on for nearly 20 years. He works for Daily Saw Service.

Kelly has in the past made unsuccessful bids for the council.
