Sports Briefs : Lawn Bowling Along

A trio of lawn bowlers, including Long Beach resident Doreen Collins, extended their opponents to an extra end before finishing second last weekend in the annual Joslyn Mixed Triples Tournament in Santa Barbara. Collins, a world-class bowler, competed with Neil McInnes and Barry Pickup, both of Pasadena. They were favored to win the title, but received a strong challenge from Joe and Thelma Duran, and Winston Wilson, all of Santa Barbara.

Gaynor to Start Saturday

The solid performance of backup quarterback Doug Gaynor, a second-year player from Cal-State Long Beach, has been impressing Cincinnati Bengals Coach Sam Wyche.

Wyche has scheduled Gaynor to start Saturday’s first preseason game against the Bucs at Tampa Bay.

“Doug’s been throwing the ball well the last 10 days,” Wyche said. “He got off to kind of a slow start in training camp. He’s not a pretty practice player, but he gets the job done in a game.”

Heartwell Boys Advance

The Heartwell All-Stars of Long Beach open play in the Pony League championships Friday in Washington, Pa. The double elimination tournament runs through Aug. 21. Heartwell battled back from the losers’ bracket to defeat the Long Beach All-Stars, 11 to 2, Tuesday night to win the West Zone regional title at Holifield Park in Norwalk. After an opening day loss, the team won six games in five days. Larry Satterlee of Heartwell hit five home runs, including a grand slam in the championship game. Pony League is for boys 13 to 14 years old.

Golf Tournament on Tap

The fifth St. John Bosco athletic department golf tournament will be held Aug. 21 at Rio Hondo Country Club in Downey. The cost is $65. Registration fees must be received by Wednesday. Call 920-1734.
