The government exploded a nuclear weapon 2,000 feet beneath the Nevada desert today, shaking high-rise hotels 75 miles away in Las Vegas with earthquake force one day after a Soviet test in Siberia.

The weapon, detonated at the Nevada Test Site at 7 a.m., packed an explosive force 11 1/2 times greater than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and was recorded at a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.
