Health Clinics in Schools
I am writing with a sigh of relief that finally school-based clinics (Part I, July 23) have come to the Los Angeles Schools. Not one, but three and there certainly is a need for them.
Los Angeles School Nurses work with a cross-section of young people. They come from diverse socio-economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Frequently the school nurse finds it a major challenge to refer low-income families for the simplest of medical services that many of us take for granted.
School nurses are “magicians” at coming up with resources for those in need. But when magic, luck and prayers run out and more public health resources are cut back, school-based clinics can be a great relief.
The school-based clinic can supplement the school nurse professional by being integrated into the school health program and providing comprehensive health services to those who might not otherwise receive them.
