A Modesto man and woman were killed when they were struck by a freight train as he was pushing her in a wheelchair across railroad tracks, the Stanislaus County sheriff’s office reported. Sgt. Richard McFarren said James William Crochun, 42, and Lori Denise White, 24, apparently had left a bar in the community of Empire and were attempting to get to their car parked nearby. Witnesses said the crossbar was down, but Crochun apparently did not see the train until the last moment.
