Eight of the 4,066 people who applied to take part in California’s first bighorn sheep hunt since 1873 won permits in a lottery in Sacramento conducted by the Department of Fish and Game.

Another 190 applicants won permits to hunt mountain lions, available to sports hunters for the first time in 14 years. There were 3,345 applications for the lion permits, which became available when Gov. George Deukmejian vetoed legislation that would have extended a moratorium on sport hunting.

Opponents of sport hunting campaigned against both the bighorn and cougar hunts, but they did not appear at the drawing to protest.
