Genny Brunet of Monument, Colo., broke away...

Genny Brunet of Monument, Colo., broke away from the main pack of riders on the 14th lap and kept her lead the rest of the way to collect a stage win in the 13th annual Coors International bicycle race.

The victory capped a two-year recovery from a car accident in which she suffered ankle and eye injuries. Complications from the accident, which included bouts with pneumonia and asthma, kept her from regaining racing form last year.

Brunet, a Canadian native riding for the Celestial Seasonings team, extended her margin with each lap of the 29-lap, 44-mile circuit that wound around the base of the Colorado ski area just off Interstate 70, about 70 miles west of Denver.

Just 2 minutes 36 seconds behind Brunet was overall race leader Jeannie Longo of France, with Katrin Tobin of Ketchum, Idaho, finishing third.

Longo holds the leader’s jersey with a total time of 7 hours 55 minutes 51 seconds, 2:03 ahead of Celestial’s Maria Canins.

In third overall is another Celestial rider, New Zealand native Madonna Harris, 2:26 behind after the first four stages.
