A cargo airplane landing Thursday at Stewart International Airport severed the tail section of another plane taxiing on a runway, but the crews of both aircraft escaped injury, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 6 a.m. and forced the airport to close for the day, airport manager Dale Huber said.

An Airborne Express cargo DC-9, which was taxiing onto the airport’s main 12,000-foot runway, lost its tail section, and an Emery Air Freight cargo DC-8 suffered damage to its left engine.

A fire broke out in the brakes and tires of the Emery plane, but was quickly extinguished, authorities said.
