A San Diego businessman told police that his car was fired upon Wednesday afternoon as he was driving the freeways in East San Diego, a police spokesman said.

The businessman, Ernest Elahi, said he heard “an explosive noise” as he drove along a transition road from Interstate 15 to Interstate 805 at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, police spokesman Bill Robinson said Thursday.

“Mr. Elahi indicated that he heard this noise and that a cloud of smoke that smelled like gunpowder blew into his car and convinced him that the noise he had heard was a gunshot,” Robinson said. Elahi was not injured and his car was not damaged.

In a separate incident, an unidentified caller told police about 6 p.m. Wednesday that a passenger in a car had brandished what appeared to be a handgun, Robinson said. A second caller corroborated the report about 10 minutes later, he said.
