A man believed to be in his 60s and suspected of robbing a Brentwood savings and loan for the second time in six months Friday escaped after police officers and two police dogs searched a nearby apartment building, police said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, used a handgun to take about $3,000 from the Century Federal Savings & Loan at about 3 p.m., Police Sgt. Bob Brounsten said.

He was later seen entering an apartment building on the same block near the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Barrington Avenue, Brounsten said.

A dozen police officers from the West Los Angeles Division searched the building with two police dogs, but they were called off at about 7:30 p.m., Brounsten said.

“We thought we had him cornered in (the building) and we searched, but he wasn’t there,” Brounsten said.

No shots or injuries were reported, Brounsten said.

The suspect is believed to have robbed the Brentwood savings and loan about six months ago, Brounsten said.
